1. Mikaela Ruef is going to see the doctor again this week to explore the possibility of more aggressive treatment for her foot. This sounded like she is not coming back as quickly as everyone had hoped.
2. Alex Greenfield was asked if she was redshirting. Amy jumped in to point out that all redshirt decisions are made during the senior year and only for "the good of the team." In other words, injured players won't automatically be redshirted unless they have shown enough during their first three academic years that the coaches decide they want them for another year.
Come to think of it, how many red shirted players have we had on the women's team? I'm trying to remember some and am drawing a blank....there must be some.
Edit: Sarah Boothe sat out 09-10 and the official website says "Sat out season and will redshirt following offseason foot surgery." This sounds very much like the decision to redshirt happened long before her senior year. I wonder what Amy meant? Did her remarks mean that Stanford could decide not to bring Sarah Boothe back next year, or have they made a commitment to do so?
Also, Ros Gold-Onwude and Mel Murphy each redshirted and came back to use all four years of eligibility here. Michelle Harrison also got an extra year of eligibility, but used it at Utah rather than at Stanford. I wonder if that is what Amy meant--Michelle may not have been invited back to play at Stanford for a fifth year, or perhaps she chose to go somewhere she could start.
I've been confused by these rules, and the coaches have played it close to the vest during questioning. It was a "mutual" decision to not bring back Michelle Harrison, but she also got to play for another team the very next year. That seemed best for both parties.
Yet, we always talk about redshirt freshmen etc. I suppose the answer is that they are redshirt eligible.
Re: The plantar whatever thread...the bottom line is that it hurts.
Re: Amber Orrange... that was a nice game. Very encouraging.
Re: Ruef... very upsetting news. This team needs her.
Re: Team defense...The starting five is excellent and getting better.
Your offense may come and go, but the defense can be a given. I think this team is developing a defense first mentality. You can do worse, and that mind set can take you pretty far.
Correct me, if I am wrong, but I didn't see Jos at the high post in this game, except by accident. Is this a match up issue? I think their offense has looked the best this year with her at or near the foul line.
