Nadia Fingall went down hard in the second half on the offensive end of the court. She got up slowly and tested her injured knee. She didn’t look happy about it. Then she struggled to get down the court to play defense. She seemed to recover enough to play the rest of the game without a noticeable limp.
After the game, when the team was waving to the fans as they left the court, Nadia was at the rear of the group as they walked past the stands where I was sitting. I could see that she was crying. I didn’t interpret this as disappointment for losing, I saw this as a possible signal of the condition of her knee. In November I saw her play in Victoria, she survived a physical pummeling there, was knocked to the floor more than once, limped back to the training room, then returned to play an inspired game. She got the MVP trophy for her efforts at the Invitational. An athlete knows his or her body. I just hope that I am reading into this situation, and we don’t see her sidelined for the Arizona games and beyond.
Nadia is quite a trooper and has played well for us. I had the privilege of sitting next to her at the end of season banquet two years ago. I was impressed by her intelligence and her desire to play the game. She was really looking forward to the next season. When she went down the following season against a USC battering (I thought it was designed to injure) and tore her ACL, I was especially sad for her. Her comeback this season has been admirable. I just hope that she is okay.
I saw her well after the game was over - she came back out without her brace and without a limp but with a big smile, giving (Tempie’s?) kid a hug. I had concerns, too, after the nasty spill under our basket after she got tangled up with Sabally.
