I thought the 'choice' between Wilson and Carrington might simply have been timing. Wilson asked first before Carrington's injury. So if a commitment was already made, there simply was not another scholie available.

I could be wrong, but I think this has nothing to do with the number of scholarships.  Not with Russell making $88 million in 2020 alone.

 

I recall somewhere that there is a limit on the number of players who are able to travel regardless of how many are on the team. If my memory serves, only 15 players can travel to away games on trips regardless of how much money is available for a player to pay their own way.

We can, sadly, count on one of 16 players being injured at any given moment in time, and if a miracle happened and all were healthy, those least likely to play could alternate on the road trips.

We were going to carry Ruef as a 16th non scholarship player on that team.  I seem to remember she wound up getting a scholarship after all, but clearly having a 16th non scholarship player, like Wilson could be, is feasible.
