I guarantee name awareness of JJ Hones is, like, .1% of the population. The Daily article just assured that the Hones case is now known by a few more than .1%, and I imagine that other news outlets will soon be following up the comparison.Â
But no matter, grant that many alums and most football fans don't remember her, and the media blitz that is about to begin is weathered by all. The long-term important audience here is faculty and administration and trustees, and their whispers about the slippery slope that leads to the corruption of Stanford's ethical standards. Those groups have been pinching themselves to see if it is all a dream that our Athletics programs have done so well while keeping clean, and so there will be close scrutiny of this case.Â
Of course, if the facts of the incident emerge and seem to reduce the seriousness of the charge, everything could change. But the quote from Shaw seemed to assume his guilt, and leaves me pessimistic.Â
