The committee has a tendency not to follow the rankings that slavishly.

The committee says that rankings are not one of the items it considers in its deliberations. In other words, they don't follow the rankings at all. That used to bug me after I got all excited about where we were in the rankings from week to week, but I've come around to feeling it is wise. Some of the folks who vote in the polls really are not paying much attention, and the committee ought to be able to do a better job by starting fresh.

All that said, the rankings represent a good guess at approximately what the committee will do. Some of the voters are paying attention and looking at roughly the same things the committee does.
