In a paywalled Boston Globe story about this, it was revealed that HBS (which hasn't settled on online or not) also plans to enroll around 150 fewer students than last fall, in part due to international student declines. I imagine Harvard moved first here because it can afford to, and many others will follow suit...
So much of that experience is about learning how to work, study and even present as cross-functional teams. Much of the rest of the experience is about networking with current students, recent alums, and companies. The lofty cost of the HBS tuition is largely justified by those group and networking experiences. Without the on-campus elements it is not hard to believe Harvard would deliver educational content roughly equivalent to any number of other places.
As a business school experience is only 2 years it appears possible that those in the Class of 2021 might have only 1 full semester on campus???? Ouch and will get the honor of trying to find work in an awful business climate.
I am sure the HBS 2021 grads will all be fine, but I can only imagine how a similar decision at other places would impact those that earn MBAs from those less selective schools.
