If you want the truth...
This is the product of decades of right wing nut jobs ascending from marginalized cranks to mainstream “conservative” thought. Attacking the media, science, facts, and living in an alternate reality conspiracy theory world, politicizing anything and everything that doesn’t suit your preferred reality is the coin of the realm. That woman in the video may be sick, but there are far too many like her for us to have a functioning society that can address its problems in any effective way. And no person is more responsible for this than Rupert Murdoch, IMO. Ds and Rs always debated policy, which is healthy. But Murdoch ushered in an opinion as media model that traded journalism for opinion as news, telling its audience there is an other they can’t trust. So when there once was agreed on facts that led to policy debate, we now have disagreement on facts and no debate on policy. The Sunday NYT article about Texas and Lubbock in particular was just unreal, as it exposed not the Covid-19 disease, as much as the sickness in people who have been led to deny science and distrust every institution that could solve our problems.
I remember before 2016 Alex Jones was thought to be a crackpot entertainer. Four years later, he’s not even as cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs as Qanon cultists, who are now winning primaries in the GOP because people like Ronald Reagan, Thomas Buckley, and Barry Goldwater, once the standard bearers for conservative thought, would be driven out of the GOP on rails. What’s amazing is a major political party has embraced idiocy, irresponsibility, and selfishness as its brand, when it once decried all three. That woman in the Target video could be chosen to run for Congress. That should scare the crap out of everyone who finds that idea implausible, because it isn’t.
