Behind a firewall. Not that I don't love the L.A. Times, but I already pay for enough media. I assume the story has something to do with someone undeserving receiving a USC degree, maybe similar to the Wal-Mart heir.
Wouldn't surprise me much. I don't know that many people who attended USC, at least not really well. I know one person who started a dental tools company at the age of 19 and did very well, USC grad. All three of my stepsister's children attended USC. I know their mother had debilitating dyscalculia (all the women on that side of the family do), presumably her kids didn't inherit it. And one of the kids on my son's volleyball team went to USC. The only thing the parents had in common was that they were stinkin' rich.
In my family, USC was thought of in much worse terms than Cal, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which that for decades USC owned Stanford in football. I have a very accomplished cousin who attended USC for a year, then transferred to Reed. He recently graduated from the Yale School of Management.
I know USC has solid academics and I encouraged both of my sons to consider it. My older son said he'd rather go to a junior college. I convinced my younger son to visit the campus and he turned around after 11 minutes and said "I'm not going here."
I got to it via Google News. IIRC a young prince from Qatar came to L.A., stayed with his brobdingnagian entourage at the Beverly Wilshire for several years (even his butlers stayed in $600 rooms). Prince enrolls in an obscure community college, never really goes to class, then gets into U$C as a transfer student, apparently only went to one class there, got a BA and MA, they held a special graduation ceremony for him and he didn't show up for that either. Apparently he spent most of his time in the H'wood club scene (one of his buddies was a Kardashian boyfriend) and gambling in Vegas.
Meanwhile his mommy visited with the then-U$C President (Nikias) and there was an implied deal that Qatar would be a significant donor to several big U$C infrastructure projects if the prince got in. Never happened, the Qataris welshed on the deal.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer school, LMAO. They actually tried UCLA first but UCLA said no dice. So they turned to U$C.
