Australians are at least as libertarian as Americans.

I have spent lots of time in Australia. I have worked there, and still do business there. I have to completely disagree. Australians talk a good game regarding their freedoms. They even revere "stockmen" as free spirits, and "go walkabout" sometimes. That said, Australians have a very well developed sense of community and do consider it their obligation to look out after each other. As one of my friends said "Australians are willing to take a little bit less so that the other guy who needs it can get a little bit more. You Americans are not". Probably correct. Actually, it is much more than that. They are very politically docile. They will sometimes demonstrate, yell, complain etc., but when push comes to shove they do as they are told because they very much trust the system. "We are Australian" are not just words in a song. It is true that their are certain sociological "third rails" in their politics, but even these can be finessed it the government approaches it correctly.
