The beauty of being a mega-whale one-and-done is you can do it from whatever school you want. The NBA doesn't care where you play if you're a mega-whale. So why not do it here?
- The #1 overall pick, Anthony Edwards, played at a downright terrible Georgia.
- The #2 overall pick, James Wiseman, played exactly 3 games at Memphis. (Memphis also had a second mega-whale freshman, Precious Achiuwa, drafted #20.)
- UW had 2 mega-whale freshmen drafted in the first round, and they came dead last in the Pac-12 this season.
- Vanderbilt came dead last in the SEC 2 seasons ago, and their mega-whale 5* recruit Darius Garland was hurt 5 games in...and got drafted #5 overall.
- Mega-whale freshman Trae Young's Oklahoma came second-to-last in the Big 12 in 2017.
Ziaire's fellow 2020 mega-whales, 5* CG/#1 overall player Cade Cuningham and 5* C Makur Maker, will be playing their one-and-done seasons at decidedly-not-a-powerhouse Oklahoma State, and...Howard.
Tippy-top recruits have to notice the fact that this year was the first since 2000 that Kansas/Duke/UNC/Kentucky combined for ZERO lottery picks.
Not that I'm going to complain about Mega-whale-one-and-dones coming to Stanford, but I do wonder why. Bragging rights of saying you got in? Chance of graduating if you are found to suffer a career-ending injury or have a career threatening congenital cardiovascular anomaly? Intention to come back after his NBA career? If I were a mega-whale-one-and-done with no intention of graduating from college, I wouldn't want my one year in college filled with having to do enough work to stay eligible at a pretty elite academic school. I'd go somewhere where I could mail it in academically and remain eligible, and pick someplace with either good weather, a great party scene, or a chance of college basketball glory.
And man, for UW, how bad is it to have two first rounders and come in dead last in the conferene (to be fair, they were injured for a good bit of time, but still).

I'm guessing you didn't read the article if you're questioning why. He's definitely a kid who values the connections that Stanford brings and wants to one day get involved in the business world. He can always finish his degree down the road. Also, no CBB player is getting a real party scene this year anyways.
