I think Outsider Fan has nailed it. There've been a series of transfers/withdrawals/decommits from the University of South Bend. Kelly was almost certainly trying to dispel any budding notion that there's something in the program driving players away from it. It doesn't seem to have worked, though.

And it shouldn't. The Irish have, like, four corners on the roster, none of whom have played much at all. Their best pass rusher is gone. It might be tough next year, and with the impending Te'o graduation, you wonder who, if any, will be the playmakers on defense in 2013 and beyond.

One hopes this puts a dent in ND recruiting--I'd guess, without going over specifically with every recruit, that ND is our biggest recruiting rival in football.
