Memorial Stadium sits on a fault line and was no longer to code, so I can give the UC a pass on needing to do something.
However, the new stadium and the AD extras always seemed too expensive to me for an AD, a University and a State that were deep in chronic budget problems.
The need to compete for top talent with the benefits and goodies has pushed many towns and cities into severe financial hardship in California, and yet those public officials continue to keep their jobs. The UC AD's choices seem suspect, but I don't think this particular choice will be too difficult for the system to absorb.
But in four or five years when Stanford types go to a Big Game and walk through the campus with cracking sidewalks and fading campus signage, just remember that those maintenance people probably were let go to cover the debt payments from a series of expensive projects, like the stadium. ;)
