LOL it’s funny and thanks for sharing but I think condemning it as plagiarism is a bit harsh. I mean, yes it was plagiarism, but I think in instances like these where there is a larger public emergency, I think it’s reasonable and in some instances a good idea to look to well-resourced, model institutions to provide “templates.” I’d rather other colleges copy Stanford’s announcements than write their own with grammatical, spelling and logical errors.

Oh wait, I just Googled this and got the latest story. It’s from last October.

Also, upon reading the story more closely, I see the university president and provost also signed the plagiarized letter, which must have been humiliating for them. If there’s one person who should know plagiarism is a no-no and who represents academic integrity of a university, it’s the university president.

I think a major issue was the fact that this is an important letter that the AD provided and that the president and provost signed, and thus it reflects upon the entire university. If it had just been a press release from the AD’s office, I don’t think the borrowed passages would have been such a big deal.

Samantha (H)uge is now the former AD of William and Mary. She resigned months ago in part as a result of this controversy.
