On a much more personal note, perhaps the most athletic thing I’ve ever seen happened in the Stanford Shopping Center parking lot. It was the spring of 1982...a more innocent time. My buddy Mark and I spent the afternoon preparing for our Cosmic Evolution lecture in the old Physics Tank by enjoying a substance that was then illegal in Cali, but is now legal.
After class, we decided to bike over to McD’s in the shopping center. We were cruising thru the parking lot, when I noticed a driver paying absolutely no attention. Ahead of Mark, I turned to yell at him, but I was too late.
Just before she hit him, Mark jumped from a moving bike over the length of her car, landing on his feet like Spider-Man. He calmly lifted up the wreckage of his bike (she ran it over), and peeled her license plate from the spokes of his rear tire. He handed her the plate, and we ate a couple of Big Macs before walking back to Lagunita.
