Equity almost never involves a precise and objectively fair determination. A four or eight team or 32 or 64 group of teams picked in a subjectively fair way would all be "equitable". It may not be perfect and it may not be the best.
I am not sure if anyone is trying to do other than get a system that allows for the top teams to play some sort of tournament format. Because in general, people find a "finals" type format to be the best indicator of who is currrently playing the best.
As a Stanford fan, you would not have enjoyed an eight team playoff over the last two years?
