If you tuned in for the last half of the last quarter and had the sound off, you might have thought Stanford did ok. However, more likely, Stanford fans tuned out for that period. I contemplated giving up.
I can't recall Stanford WWP ever being down 5 goals. Mid third quarter, Stanford was down 9-4. Ugly. Our All American goalie did not play well in my opinion. A number of lob shots got in. The goal that really hurt was a late in the shot clock 10th goal in the 4th quarter. I think our goalie assumed ASU (with a big lead) was just going to dump the ball off. I didn't see her react to the shot at all.
Stanford's first 2 shots were right at the goalie's body. Several seemed to slip off the shooter's hand.
Stanford put the goalie in the field for the last 20 seconds, giving us a 7 on 6 advantage. We had a shot to tie it but, like a number of shots earlier, the ball seemed to slip off the hand of the shooter and went high over the goal.
We lost 10-9 against ASU, giving ASU a record now of 1-26 against Stanford.
Even if Stanford demolishes ASU tomorrow, I don't see Stanford retaining their #2 ranking. They did not look like the #2 team for 3.5 quarters today.
I hope that Stanford can use this loss to motivate themselves.
