Revisionist history? I am not quite so sure "everyone" was on board with giving Haase more time 24 months ago. I know I wasn't in that camp. Wished Muir let him go prior to that 2019-2020 NCAA Tournament or Bust season.
The 2019-2020 tournament or bust was an odd path because it was giving Stanford the worst parts of a coach on the last year of his contract for recruiting while still having him on a long term contract. That path is on Muir not Haase. UCLA's seed this year makes it clear to me that Stanford was not going to make the 2019-2020 tournament. Therefore Muir should have let Haase go no more than 7 days after the loss in the 2020 Pac-12 Tournament. However, COVID became a thing so the or bust part of the mandate fell apart.
If not for COVID-19, Muir should have let Haase go no more than 7 days after this season's loss in the 2021 Pac-12 Tournament. It seems like most schools in the USA are not firing coaches this year in most sports. I can only imagine that most schools have kept to the general belief that this was such a unique and challenging season that all staff should be retained.
That lack of a vibrant coaching market may be why Haase is safe again. While I believe I have been part of the not quite everybody group over the last 25 months, I actually understand that Haase will be (should be) the coach in 2021-2022. Though I wish Haase would spend the summer working with former basketball coaches known for creating effective offenses without multiple above average playmakers on the court at all times.
