I'm actually pretty hungover from the 14th place finish with which the Stanford men's varsity eight ended up. There were expectations for a decent season, but 14th place was certainly not in anyone's minds at the start of the season. The men's second varsity was very strong and ended up with 6th place, but the time differential in its race probably indicates some sort of grand misfortune during the race--they were 20 seconds off the 5th place finisher, which is a long time in rowing. The frosh/novice eight finished 14th, which is a tough place to be. The level of competition this year seemed pretty high to be honest...lots of fast times were seen during the season.
The openweight women finished 9th in team points at the NCAAs with a combined showing of 8th in the varsity eight, 11th in the second varsity eight, and 16th in the four. They did graduate a lot of talent last year, and one of those graduates will be rowing in London (Elle Logan '11).
Two of the Stanford men's crew alumni will be in London as well in the men's eight: David Banks ('05) and Jake Cornelius ('06).
