I think Marquess monitors pitch counts. When Jessica Mendoza (now doing sideline reporting for ESPN) asked him if Appel could throw an inning or two in relief on Sunday, he replied, "No, he's thrown 80 pitches, that's why we got him out of there." So it was the pitch count, and not all the walks and hit batsmen, that finally got him sent to the bench.

Oh, I absolutely think he monitors pitch counts.  However, at least according to the KZSU announcers, he allowed one pitcher to throw over 140 pitches this season. 

If he took him out because of the pitch count, it's even worse than I thought it was.  When a pitcher loses the strike zone like Appel did, you make one mound visit and then have him on a very tight leash.  When Appel did throw a strike, it was a BP fastball.  Leaving a kid out there in that situation is not good coaching.  Sure, some bounce back, but some are never the same again.
