Yes, boredom is often an issue.  You could certainly imagine someone who can do complex math in their head chafing at having to show every step of their process, when the answer is self-evident.  But laziness can also be an issue. Intelligence and diligence are not necessarily correlated. The concern here (either way) is that at some point, the material will become challenging enough to meet their ability and they won't have developed the skills to go beyond their innate smarts.
