I got to thinking that soon the power schools like UConn, Baylor, South Carolina, etc will be cherry picking the very best players.

After Stanford beat Louisville in the Elite 8 game, in the post-game presser the Louisville coach openly talked about sifting through the transfer portal - which he characterized as a form of "free agency" - for kids who could help his program this season. It is no longer a theoretical thing, but a very real boon to programs willing and able to take transfers.
To answer your question: Stanford cannot compete in that arena. How many legit D1 players transfer out of the Ivies? You'll get a couple each season . . . maybe. But hey, that could be where Stanford "lives" in the portal world.
