I'm not sure I'd be able to answer your questions well. But just having quickly read the first book (and only the first book) I find it funny that two of the major plot points (those concerning Leto and Yueh) aren't twists at all. In fact, the book tells you from the opening chapters exactly what's going to happen to them. And also gives major hints about other characters that I won't reference here because that's being left to the second movie.
