I’ve only watched episodes 1 and 2 so far, and even though I am a Beatles fan and also a musician I have to agree that the first two episodes can be a real slog at times, especially when the studio shots are in real time and everyone has to wait for the engineer to change reels, etc. That’s the boring part of studio recording and while it’s interesting to see the Beatles joking around and half-playing old tunes to pass the time, it can be a bit much.
It is nice to see the interplay between them. Ringo is so cool and calm and patient. No one ever raises his voice, although that might be editing.
What I got from the first 2 episodes was a renewed appreciation for their musical talents and skills. (I knew about Billy Prestons contributions but I didn’t know that John played the guitar leads on “Get Back.”) And Paul’s guitar and piano skills are also in evidence. The scenes where they are fleshing out the songs we all recognize are a real treat.
Once things get going musically in episode 2 we see less of Yoko, even though she’s at John’s side constantly. Some judicious camera work there.
BTW it’s 141 hrs of unseen footage, not 41!
