Hard for me to tell until I've watched. There was almost no Super 16 (slightly larger than the HD 16x9 frame) in the early 70's. If they shot on 16 then Jackson has done some wizard work stretching the frame without distortion. If they were thinking theatre exhibition they might have shot with fixed focal (what we call hard or prime) lenses which particularly in the 70's were much sharper than the generation of zooms. The sharper the image the sharper the exhibition print. Also if shot in 16mm widescreen (Super 16) there is more information on the celluloid in a blowup to 35. Done by shooting single perf stock and changing the size of the film camera gate.
