thanks for linking! some of the highlights of the article for me are that one of the arenas that started the use of "from downtown" was madison square garden, which is located in mid-town manhattan. as you point out, in most cities, the city center is downtown, but in manhattan it's mid-town. in msg, a shot from downtown would be from 20 to 30 blocks away. also that earlier the term was used to celebrate long-distance shots by "downtown" freddie brown, whose nickname references his high school in downtown milwaukee.
