The answer to all the “why can’t we…” questions is that we are not playing against cardboard cutouts, and the other team is actively trying to prevent us from executing our game plan. As one of the best teams in the country, we can usually prevail and do enough of what we want to do and prevent the other team from doing what it wants to do to win.
Although it would be nice to have a wire to wire dominant performance (Maryland was close to that, at least until the fourth quarter when the game was already decided), but again, the other team will work to try to at least get a good stretch in, even if they aren’t at Stanford’s level and stymying is for a whole game is not easy.
