In that link is a copy of the sports page from the SF Examiner.  It said "Cards nip Colorado".  Stanford had been the Indians from 1930 until 1972.  Anyone know why the paper referred to the team as the "Cards" in 1950?

My guess is that an older, pre-1930 nickname was sometimes used for typesetting reasons. The body of the article and the picture caption say "Indians," which wouldn't have fit in the column with the font size they used for the headline.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't out of sensitivity or respect for Native Americans, given that a few years later the Examiner used the headline "Injuns Scalped" to refer to a loss to Michigan State.
