They got knocked off their independence stance but can't even "commit" all the way because they want the ND faithful to feel like they're still among football's anointed. If things become more structured in football playoffs, they've got a ticket to ride with the ACC or they can bolt back to the more natural base in the Big Ten.Â
As it is, they've got the mentality of a cute girl who cozies up with a playah standing in line for an exclusive nightclub. She'll use him to get past the doorman and in to where the action is, but is planning to ditch him if her prospects get better inside.
Don't know what this means for the ND/Stanford series. I don't think Stanford should bag our home game date to play ND in China as proposed, and maybe ND will use that as an opportunity to dump us and use the opportunity to pick an ACC softy to beat up in Beijing or Shanghai or wherever.  I think ND views our series with them as more disposable than the USC series so we might see them disappearing off our schedule as they jigger their schedule to fit in the ACC games.
