It all happened on the 6th hole where he recorded a 9. He was even par for the rest of the round.
But Stanford would have lost even if Vilips had made a par 4 instead of a quintuple bogey on the 6th. Nobody shot under par today for Stanford, whereas Washington, which won the tournament, had a 65, 66 and 69. Nevada, which was 2nd, had a 65 and 67. SMU, which was 4th, carded a 66, 66 and 69. Lots of low scores today, but none by the Stanford golfers.
Stanford had a good shot at second but the players who counted were a combined +4 on the 18th hole alone (Ng double bogey + bogey from Brown & Shimp). Average Round 3 score was 4.37, so if they had just played it average they would have only been +1 or +2 on 18.
Hate to say it, but I don't think this team has the talent to be a legit national title contender. They should make the cut at regionals to advance, but I'd be surprised if they made the match play (top 8)
