I think cal's struggles are mostly explicable by poor coaching. But they have good running backs, solid tight ends...and a brobdingnagian advantage at wide receiver. It's not just Keenan Allen, but it's Bryce Treggs and Chris Harper. Either of the latter two would (probably) easily start and might well be the most talented wideout on the roster. Maynard may have had drops but they've been fewer and less egregious than Nunes'.
Has Nunes been an average QB? No question. Is that good enough to win, say, 10 or 11 games? Again, no. But I'd much rather have Nunes than Maynard--right now, forget improvement.
(I also don't care about completion percentage.)
I think Nunes' statistics are skewed by a clear outlier--the first game, against San Jose State, in which the gameplan was so radically different than the gameplan in the other two games that it seems safe to say we'll never get a performance quite as bad as that. If you take it out, Nunes' 7.9 YPA is well above average--and reflects his better play than Maynard, especially when considering the reshuffling along other parts of the offense.
