I'm guessing the November games are replacing matches we previously scheduled against BYU. I think it might be helpful for the conference, at least, because the timing of the ND games against Stanford and USC can create some difficulties in coming up with the conference football schedule. We end up having an odd number of teams when one is occupied with Notre Dame. Some years we've even had one conference team end on a bye. Perhaps this helps relieve the pressure.
