On the old Bootleg board, many years ago (I believe it was during the peak years of Stanford Men's BB national prominence under Monty), there was a thread about The Play.  A poster said he happened upon Mark Harmon watching a game at Maples in 1982.  He wrote that Harmon said that he told a coach (either the OC or special teams coach) that he wanted to kick it deep.  The coach overruled him, demanding he squib it.  The rest is history. 
I take it you interviewed Harmon.  Did you get that story as well?
