The SF State freshman team used to play at Q. My pal actually kicked a PAT over a wall. We did a Gumbal story on Q baseball. Interviewed the pitching coach who said he was #1 on a St. Johns staff that also had John Franco and Frank Viola. Big guy resembled Randy J. When Bryant asked him why his quick minor league career ended he said, "Made the mistake of killing my wife."

Around 1961, my dad's softball team played the prison team at Lompoc.  The CF on the prison team tried to escape by climbing the CF chain link wall.  A Lompoc guard shot him and they left him there for the remainder of the game.

Fantastic! Mental error?

One of the guards told dad (unofficially) that there had been numerous escape attempts and they wanted to send a message to the inmates.

Dad did say that they received a tour of the prison.  He saw a high school classmate behind bars, one who was known for breaking into houses and stealing what was there.  He said they locked eyes for a long moment.  Abject misery.
