Don’t underestimate the effect of rule changes (and interpretations) favoring the offense over time.  If DB’s played now how they played then, you’d see a ton of defensive holding and pass interference called (or, to put it another way, if DB’s were allowed to bump and hold as much now as they used to, you’d see a lot more incomplete passes and interceptions).
