I believe Regan could have transferred to ASU and swum there this year.  But I guess she wanted the Stanford degree.

It's hard to tell from press releases, but my sense of the statements made by (or for) Regan is that at this time she is not particularly interested in the Stanford degree or any other degree. She wants to "focus on increasing my training intensity". That may be incompatible with school. 
And she's going to swim with a coach who is noted for intensity.
