The proliferation of other, violent sports like rugby and lacrosse are attracting a significant number of women's athletes.

Rugby and lacrosse? Pffft. 

Ever watched a water polo game? My then 11 year old wanted to play a sport that would toughen her up. She's still only 5'6" and 118 pounds playing goalie. One of my favorite quotes from her "I have really pointy elbows, and I know how to use them." And she does. Another time, I think with her club team, an opponent struggled to get to the edge of the pool gasping and crying. I asked my daughter what happened and she told me "Oh, she was playing really dirty, so so-and-so kicked her in the chest. She deserved it." Not that I condone violence, but I had to chuckle at her matter of fact reply.
