Stanford had two black football players before me. Ernest Houston Johnson enrolled at Stanford in 1891, its first year of existence, and played one season. Ernest was ignored when he first tried to enroll, but Jane Lathrop Stanford interceded.
Tom Williams, a walk-on running back in 1958, was the first in the modern era. This was after Eddie Tucker ['53] became the first recruited black athlete in Stanford history, joining the basketball team in 1950. Harry McCalla, a star distance runner, was a year ahead of me.

A tiny but historic cohort of African-American students entered Stanford on the vanguard of the civil rights movement. This is how it felt.

Lost to history for 100 years, Stanford’s first African American student found a new champion, and an old debate was finally laid to rest.

A short piece on Al Wilburn '67, one of the first African American football players at Stanford. In his senior year he was a team captain and Stanford's athlete of the year. After Stanford he became a doctor.
