My guess is that the people triggered by the decision had visions of Notre Dame marching down the field and kicking the game winning field goal as time expired.  Even I thought “here we go again” as we lined up in punt formation.

Crunching the numbers, punting made more sense than kicking a field goal, and while I didn’t crunch the numbers for going for it on fourth down, instinctively that seems like it would have been a uniquely bad choice.
