All in all, Fitzgerald's been a force for good. It's not like his reporting is making up stuff about what we've all seen on the field. If Shaw is defensive because of the uneven press coverage ( i.e. not uniform praise) then he's just going to have to grow up.
The alternative approach to covering a team is the Chron's K.al beat writer Crumpacker, who until this season has mostly been a press agent for K.al's football program. Guess he figured out there's no way to dress up a pig.
Shaw is also a bit spoiled. Until year 3 of the sainted Harbaugh, the Chron hardly believed real football was being played down on the penninsula. Fitzgerald seemed like a part-time stringer, w/ Kal coverage seeming to run about double the coverage of Stanford. This was a Chron editorial decision, not Fitzgerald's. The Stanford improvement has come mostly for the off-game day coverage throughout the week. There was a time not too long ago where it seemed Stanford got one pre-game article and one game coverage per week.
