Giants asked for exchange, not area code. The exchange is the next 3 digits after the area code. Exchanges used to have names, and you would dial the first two letters of the name as the first two digits. For instance, an old Milwaukee phone number that started 466-1234 was given as HOpkins 6-1234. I think that practice was phased out around 1965.

Currently, Stanford phone numbers have digits 72 after the area code. I'm unclear if that was true way back when exchanges still had names. I seem to remember there was a great phone number reassignment during the early 1980s when I was there, giving everyone 723- and 725- numbers.

Well, my bad. He did list 408 for San Jose and 210 for San Antonio, both are area codes for the metro areas. . . .

No big deal.  I remember a bunch of East Bay exchanges, TElegraph, OLympic, and ELmhurst.  Mine was the aforementioned LAkehurst in Alameda but I don’t remember any from the South Bay.
