I had one until the mid-1970s when I matriculated to Stanford. Sometimes you could tell when someone was listening in.
My town (exchange) was so small that we only had to dial the last 4 digits of the phone number. No area code, no prefix.
When I was in junior high, I started to dial the prefix. My thinking was that I would eventually have to get used to dialing seven digits when I went to college - so I should get used to it. I explained this to my sister who was already in college. She said, "you are an idiot."
