In the 50s, when I was a way prepubescent tyke, my mother made us all memorize our phone number, which is one of the few things I CAN remember nowadays:
Larchmont 2-3024-J…the”J” indicating our place in the party line pecking order. We also had no dialing. We would pick up the phone and an operator would ask “Number, please?” and connect us. What a relic!
