If a thread has enough relevant content and can be salvaged after a time out, I (speaking for myself) would prefer not to permanently lock it.  There are some threads where I think it is just too hard to try to keep out of politics.  I think this thread is at a high risk, but managed to go 5 pages long before a couple posts crossed the line.  I think as long as it focuses on Stanford policy, it's fine.
