Stanford posted 274 (-6), the 3rd best score by any team all week. They are now in 6th place, well in contention for the top 8 after tomorrow's round and advancing to match play.
They did it with solid play from top to bottom. Barclay Brown is playing perhaps the best of his Stanford career. He shot 67 (-3) and sits in 3rd place in the individual competition. Karl Vilips is playing steadier than he ever has too. He had a history of blowing up on a hole or two, then taking a few more holes to recover. Today he made 16 pars, 1 birdie and 1 bogey for even par 70. Michael Thorbjornsen recovered from 2 of his worst rounds as a Stanford Cardinal with a 68 (-2). He bogeyed the 18th but that was soooo much better than his 10 yesterday. Ethan Ng had a great round going until he double bogeyed the 16th hole. He still posted 69 (-1), his first round under par this week. Nate Menon is still trying to get his footing on this course. He shot 74 (+4) which did not count.
There is some separation as of now between the top 5 and teams 6 through 12. Stanford is in a group of about 7 teams that will be competing for the final 3 spots tomorrow. It's interesting to me that the top 12 includes no teams from the Big 12. Defending national champ Texas is in 21st. Oklahoma which has won and finished runner up within the last 5 years is in 13th. 5th ranked Texas Tech is further back. Perennial power Oklahoma State did not even make the tournament.
5. Georgia Tech +2
6. Stanford +10
7. Arizona State +11
8. Florida State +13
8. Vanderbilt +13
10. Virginia +14
11. Auburn +16
12. Texas A&M +17
