One question I have for the engineers here is based on something James Cameron said about carbon fiber. He said carbon fiber composites have great strength and rigidity but no compression strength. Does anyone know more about this? It seems that OceanGate had several successful trips to the Titanic and other deep sea locations. Is it possible that the fiber weakened over time like metal fatigue? Supposedly, there were sensors on the hull designed to give a warning about weakness that was supposed to allow the pilot a chance to resurface. One commenter said that by the time the sensor went off, it would already be too late to do anything about it. I have no knowledge to evaluate the legitimacy of those claims. Any expert opinions?
