The list since Snyder tells us a lot about Cal’s awful football fortunes.

Keith Gilbertson was a very good coordinator.  He was a terrible head coach.  I believe it’s called The Peter Principal.  He was a miserable failure at UW as the head man as well. 

Steve Mariucci showed some promise but got an offer he couldn’t refuse from SF.

Tom Holmoe should never have been hired as the head coach.  His inability to properly manage his staff led to disastrous results.  Conflict resolution was not in his skill set.  

Jeff Tedford ruined his health by working around the clock.  He struggled with delegation and no coach can succeed long term if he doesn’t trust his staff.

Sonny Dykes had no interest in staying at Cal any longer than he had to.  He was always on the hunt for another job, preferably one in Texas.  He left as soon as he could (yes, he was fired but he set things up to get terminated, collect some money and go back to Texas).  He was an awful hire.  

Justin Wilcox, another Gilbertson, a very good coordinator, a lousy head coach.  The proof is in the results.  

Cal will never achieve long term success until they hire a guy who has a successful track record at a major program.  Since that isn’t going to happen, Cal will never rise above mediocrity for any length of time.
