Cal will never achieve long term success until they hire a guy who has a successful track record at a major program.  Since that isn’t going to happen, Cal will never rise above mediocrity for any length of time.

Fixed it for you. Success at a major program doesn't translate to success at Cal. Exactly what does, if anything, is at this time unknown. IMO it requires somebody who can adapt to the unique social and political situation at UCB while also possessing a great football mind and the ability to extract good performance out of a staff that isn't really "up to par" with "major programs". Can it be done? Short term, maybe. Long term, no. But how many programs achieve "long term" (say > 5 years in a row of top 10) anyway?
