Can someone explain succintly why Stanford joining the Big10 is out of the cards for now?

Money.  Fox scrounged up another $35M/year to pay half-shares to UW and Oregon.

With the Big 10 at 18 teams, Stanford's incremental value would be minimal, meaning reductions in
money to the other teams.

There's also the part that while Washington was wanted by the presidents and Fox, the presidents wanted Stanford to be the 18th member but Fox wanted Oregon, or so I've heard.
