While I think many programs made significant steps toward creating self-sustaining endowments, the true cost of Stanford athletics includes not only the sum of each program's individual costs but also the cost of the department administrators and shared services as well.  All the assistant/associate/directors, staffers, trainers, medical staff, etc add up to a big chunk.  Some years ago, there was a big pay bump to bring salaries up to market/competitive rates.

I would think that the AD would have tacked on an "allocated overhead" line item to any of the sports trying to create a sustaining funding endowment but I'm somewhat cynical....
