Newsflash.....BART is on the Peninsula!
I'm sure you and the little lefties know that one can actually ride to Berkeley on BART without crossing over the Bay or getting in a car, other than to drive to a Caltrain station as necessary. (Honestly, Millbrae is a lot faster than going to Union City or Fremont, unless you are more in the Valley than on the Peninsula.)
I would use my kids as human shields whenever venturing into Berkeley in a Stanford sweatshirt for a Big Game since their mother would insist on dressing the toe-heads in blue and gold. It certainly stuck with my daughter; not so much with my son (although how ironic that his alma mater is 'The Blue and Gold'.) Cute kids are like wearing an orange vest and hard hat. You can go anywhere. Best memory of that time remains explaining to my 4 y.o. son what 'Fox Stanford' meant while walking back to BART after the win in '98.
I have to say that I never had any real hassles from Calfan in Berkeley. A few hassles from Calfan in Palo Alto. Go figure.

Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working .I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. Peter Gibbons
